On the 30th March (got a wee bit behind on the blogging front recently…) were the trials for the UK team to enter the Street Workout World Cup 2013, the first stage of which is happening in Madrid next week.
The format of the day was that each competing athlete was given one point which he could award to the (other) athlete he thinks was best. I think there was a time limit – maybe 5 minutes to use whichever bits of equipment the athlete wanted. This gave them a chance to show a range of skills.
I’ve got to say I didn’t feel the standards were as high as they normally are, but hey – I’m probably a bit jaded after spending the summer training with the best in the country! ;) I think that was mainly as a result of it being freezing cold so everyone’s body wasn’t up to full speed. And I guess the lack of heavy training on the bars over winter was also a factor too. Obviously that’s not to say that these guys aren’t awesome – they really are – just not as awesome as I’ve seen them be.
Sadly Sai’s been ill so couldn’t attend, Lee was busy with family commitments, and Miguel couldn’t have attended the Madrid leg even if he wanted to compete, so it left things pretty open. Below are the sets of the competitors:
And a nice little video Ben made of the “after party”:
The winners, if you can’t be bothered to watch the videos, were Ranjit Bhachu and Anton Guidera. Both very worthy winners – I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know them over the past year or so, and not only are they epically strong, but also lovely humble people.
Good luck guys!
